CDCN is making great progress — moving ahead with two new projects and developing our existing businesses. We now employ three people part-time, volunteering is at an all time high and our turnover continues to increase.

Scrap-store:

After the three month trial of opening on Wednesdays, this has been a success, so the Scrap-store will continue to open on Wednesdays from 1pm – 3pm; this will be reviewed again in a few months’ time. Sunday afternoons are still as popular as ever, with the opening hours remaining as 2pm – 5pm, and private viewings can be arranged if desired. Facebook followers have steadily increased, there’s now over 2200 of them, and Facebook has become an important selling platform for the Scrap-store. Our stock of Christmas items is now going on display, so please come along for a look—everybody welcome.

Gym:

The gym rules have changed somewhat: up to six people from different households are now permitted to attend the gym at the same time. Please contact the Development Officer at: developmentofficer@cdcn.co.uk to register your interest in joining. You can read more about the gym here: https://www.cdcn.co.uk/gym

Next projects:

CDCN has two projects underway: an EV charge point and allotments/Polycrubs. We aim to locate the EV charge point in the main carpark and we’ll hopefully have it installed early next year. CDCN also aims to provide allotments and Polycrubs around the back of the buildings—please write to developmentofficer@cdcn.co.uk if you are interested in renting a Polycrub or allotment. CDCN has submitted the plans for these projects for planning permission; they can be viewed on the Shetland Islands Council’s website: https://pa.shetland.gov.uk/online-applications/

CDCN is delighted to announce that we have received funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise to support the role of Development Worker over the next two years; please see the advert on the back of this newsletter. This worker will see the afore-mentioned projects through to fruition, as well as begin working towards further projects and will assist other groups in the community with developing any projects they have.

Avyanna, Beauty Salon

Leeann will soon be joined by Molly, who will be offering nail treatments. Further information on what’s available in the salon is available here: https://www.cdcn.co.uk/what-we-offer/avyanna Please phone: 07401578157 or 01595 890703, or visit Avyanna Beauty Salon’s Facebook page.

Other news and announcements:

  • Development Worker wanted. CDCN wishes to recruit a Development Worker—please see the advert on the back of this newsletter.

  • Sanitary products are now available free of charge to gym users, salon clients and Scrap-store visitors through a Scottish government initiative.

  • CDCN has provided additional parking with an adjacent picnic area across the road from the Aald Skül, which will be useful at bonfire night and for UHA. CDCN has also bought a park bench, which will be placed elsewhere in Nesting, please let us know if you have any ideas as to where it would be best situated.

DEVELOPMENT WORKER (full time, two year post)

Salary £28,000, 35 hours per week

We’re looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic development worker to take forward our portfolio of diverse community projects and help develop our current assets, including:

  • Improvement of CDCNs facilities at the Aald Skül, including exploring options for the expanding Scrap Store

  • Encouraging community growing through the development of allotments and Polycrubs on CDCN land

  • Raise awareness of net zero opportunities for the area and identify how the community can contribute to the climate crisis

Previous experience of community development projects, including sourcing external funding required. Strong communication skills a must.

While some working from home is acceptable CDCN has a community-based office which the directors feel should be used. Candidates must have their own car, or access to one and be prepared to work some evenings and weekends.

Job share may be considered; less than full time hours may be considered

To find out more about this exciting role please contact: Dougie Stevenson dstevensoncdcn@gmail.com
